Audience: The audience in President Obama's speech is clear, "My fellow Americans..." this speech is directly for the United States citizens. He is educating the population on who ISIL is and what they have been doing as a terrorist organization. Indirectly, President Obama is speaking to the terrorist group themselves; he knows that there are a few if not majority of the members in ISIL listening to his speech. He is warning ISIS that if they do not back down that America will "...degrade and ultimately destroy..." them. Obama uses much pathos in his explanation of ISIS and what the United States plan to do; he refers to how many of the troops have been brought home, how the safety of America is most important, how ISIS kills children, and how they murder their own people. Those topics are all going straight for the emotion in Americans. Lastly he is speaking partially to congress when he says that he needs their permission to train Syrian rebels to help fight against ISIS.
Topic/Subject: President Obama is informing the United States on who ISIS is and what they do, as well as how to destroy ISIL. He informs the people that ISIS calls themselves the "Islamic State" and that their name is not true to what they believe; no religion condones the killing of innocent people and they are not a state. After explaining who ISIS is, Obama goes on to explain the military action against ISIS; including air strikes, the use of American soldiers that will aid Iraq on the ground by training, intelligence, and equipment.
Rhetor: The speaker, President Obama, has credibility to some degree being that he is the President of the United States. He speaks eloquently throughout his speech; he knows what he is going to say before speaking to the audience. President Obama gives his audience, the American citizens, enough information about who ISIS is, what they do, and what America is looking to do to put an end to their destruction. By Obama's use of logos he develops a strong credibility as well as his use of pathos. By relating death and the safety of Americans to the needed destruction of ISIS, he is gaining the support of some Americans.
